Students at Assumption Secondary School may avail of an optional Transition Year programme. Transition Year offers our students the opportunity for academic, social, emotional and spiritual development. Great emphasis is placed on developing students' sense of self-worth and confidence. Students are encouraged to try out new subjects and to take on new activities, all within a safe and protected learning environment. Acceptance to the Transition Year programme is based on a combination of interview, personal statement, behaviour, commitment to the school and general suitability.
All Transition Year students must continue with their studies in the core academic subjects - English, Irish, Maths, Science, Home Economics, P.E., Religion, Modern Languages, Computers, History and S.P.H.E. Students also avail of work experience placements and undertake community service. In addition, students are offered a variety of short courses which may vary from year to year. These include Law, Interview Skills, Business and Enterprise, Public Speaking and Music.
Transition Year students are assessed on a continuous basis by their teachers and mentors. Assessment includes class work, projects and a portfolio. They sit house exams at Christmas. On the basis of the marks accumulated over the year, they are then awarded the following grades - Distinction, Merit, Pass or Registered for the course.
